Denver Post reports on Commerce Department reports, which report "dismal" home construction reports. Reportedly, December "capped the worst year for builders on record dating to 1959."
Given the prominent products of the construction industry since 1959, feeling bad about this is a little like feeling bad about a decline in Detroit's car sales. But then the two are perfectly connected in a failing paradigm. We need construction and place-making alternatives as much as we need energy and transportation alternatives and these are inherently tied to issues of social justice.
The auto-dependent, big-box bestrewn, golf coursy, water-sucking, "master planned" suburb of the southwest is the Hummer of the construction industry. (There are green hummers, but that seems a little silly to me - giving public subsidies for them especially so.)
