Former Mayor of Albuquerque Louis Saavedra died recently. One of Monahan’s old gators said Saavedra was “reclusive
and secretive.” I think we’re just incapable of judging how a mayor
can operate effectively out of the limelight after witnessing the reign of Marty. It is hard to recall that arrogance and loyalty are not necessary components of good government.
I remember him as highly intelligent, deliberative and hard working. He may have been the stealth mayor where the press was concerned, but he was approachable and respectful of staff. It was a delightful surprise and relief to find him so completely unlike his predecessor - Schultz. (We pronounced it with disgust-ridden drawn out sssss's at the beginning and end.)
At a staff briefing on the comprehensive plan soon after his election he asked pointed questions that indicated he had not only read the document, but that he understood the heart of the matter. He got that planning was a process - not a static document. Each of the major recommendations would require on-going public involvement in updating procedures and ordinances. He seemed to understand that it wasn't all about him - the future extended far beyond his place within it.
The desire to name a legacy upon his death misses the point that the best leaders can't honestly take sole credit for most of the best things. Building the future is collaborative work we can all have a hand in.
Get that big Marty sign out of my neighborhood, would you? He's taking credit for the sky now and that purple hurts my eyes.
